GREECE: Master Class in Art & Technology with Craig Dongoski
Ionion Center for Culture & the Arts
May 13- May 28
RadiOpolis 2017: is a 2-Session <(8)days per session> Masterclass led by artist Craig Dongoski. The class will be held on the island of Kefalonia, Greece and hosted by Ionion Center for Arts & Culture. A call for applications is open and a mix of (12) visual artists, musicians, programmers, filmmakers, writers, performers will be selected based on individual strengths and willingnesses to cooperate within group dynamic. This will be a multidisciplinary program. There will be no priority placed on a particular medium. We will instill and operate from an openness dictated by the make-up of the collective artists meshed with the experience on the island. Our focus is on producing new models & new vocabularies. Artists will have the option in their pursuits to be as raw and removed from technology as they prefer and/or as immersed. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to the painting of a significant mural in Kefalonia.
RADIO: Exploring, expressing, discovering and articulating the energies of the island will be at the center of this course. Radio will be our primary vehicle. This will include building and using Aeolian harps to use as tools to capture raw material and ponder the difference of natural vs. constructed signals. We will also use radio to broadcast content that we produce on a local station.
Though radio, ionosphere and wind will be primary materials to expose energies, we will dedicate considerable time to terrain, particularly energies within the stones that are ubiquitous on the island. Sophisticated BioFeedback will be at least at least one tool available in this context.
MURAL: Below is a video document of mural completed by participants in last year’s program
The 2017 Program will provide interested participants the opportunity to design and execute a large-scalemural on and near the Greek Naval Academy. Last year’s video entitled Enceladus was inspired by the earthquake and seismic activity and the affects of the moon.
This year’s mural will take into account the sea, ships, camouflage and the locale as its grounded theme. With that said, participants interested in being a part of the mural are encouraged to develop their ideas around this theme.
Public Exhibitions: Participants will have the opportunity to exhibit at a number of different venues as well as explore alternative and site-specific locales around the island.
Collaboration and Communion: Interaction with local talent and exceptional visiting artists are another significant component offering of the program. This includes access to island radio, critiques and artistic/musical interactions.
